CAIN AND ABEL -- The Interpretation of Genesis 4 The name Abel means "breathe", Genesis 2:7. Breathe as used here connotes the detached Spirit of God into man. Spirit connotes energy: energy is defined as, " the measurement of work capacity ”. Abel is representative of the human Spirit. The Lord in this story refers to our heavenly Father... ' Father of all Spirits', the source from whom all Spirits (energy) flow. Cain means, 'an acquirer', a tiller of the ground or one who acquires (substantiability) through hard labour. If Abel represents the human Spirit, Cain is symbolic of the ego-driven self. Adam and Eve, according to this story represent the masculine and feminine aspects of creation. The word 'God' connotes, 'the sovereign creator (of the perceptible worlds)'.
